This coming week I will be visiting Denver for the second time before I finish my exchange. My first visit was to help my older host sister, Miranda, move from Washington D.C. It was a girls and dogs road trip; we met her in Indianapolis and drove all the way to Colorado, stopping in Junction City for an overnight stay. Once in Denver we met up with Miranda’s husband and enjoyed a couple of days in the mile high city. I adored it so much that I have decided to visit again and get to spend more time with my long lost sister.

The first visit to Denver was refreshing and truly what I needed at the time. The trip was at the end of January, therefore, the winter blues had me firmly in their grasp and I needed something to shock some life back into me. When we began to drive into Denver I was overcome with emotions, the mix of skyscrapers and rocky mountains was stunningly beautiful. This trip is where my ‘waves of happiness’ definition came from; I was standing in downtown Denver with my host mum, sister and her husband and I felt an overwhelming sense of happiness. This phrase is now what I use every time I remember how grateful I am for these opportunities.

The first night in Denver we had dinner at Lucky Pie Pizza. The pizza was delicious and I would highly recommend the restaurant. After indulging, we explored the downtown area. It was quirky and unique. In the main streets there is an abundance of lights and different sculptures which show the character Denver has to offer. Along the way we stopped at a Hard Rock store so that I could fulfil what is fast becoming my souvenir tradition, purchasing a classic grey hoodie. I now own three and there is hopes that the collection will grow before I leave – even though I am already struggling to comprehend how I will get everything home.

Monday morning I woke to the rousing city. The hotel window boasted fantastic views and I did not hesitate to take pictures. My host mum unfortunately felt unwell and was focusing her attention on a paper she had to write, so I went for a little solo adventure. Following a short photography shoot and some Starbucks, I walked along to the Denver Art Museum. The walk allowed me to take in the city and enjoy the winter snow. The art museum at the time was offering a Dior exhibition. The event was stunning and brilliantly told the story of one of the world’s high class fashion brands. The pieces on display were mesmerizing. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.

In the afternoon myself and my host sister met up for lunch before taking the dogs for a long walk around downtown Denver. I would highly recommend exploring Denver on foot as it is very walkable and lets you completely take in your surroundings. Another area of Denver where there is character is RiNo – the arts district. Located there is Denver’s Central Market which hosts a variety of food and drink. This was where we grabbed something quick to take back to the hotel and had a night to unwind.

Due to the bad weather across the United States during the time of our visit, our flight got cancelled and we were rewarded with an extra day in Denver. I was very pleased! This day was a good chance to show my host mum the RiNo district and the market. The area is filled with murals and distinctive shops. It is a must for anyone who loves art and supporting local businesses. Moreover, we visited a local bookstore called the Tattered Cover Book Store. They boasted a collection of used and new books, and also a cute little café where you can enjoy a coffee and delve into a good book.

The Mile High City did not disappoint. I think that my host sister and her husband will have years of happiness there. This coming Friday is my opportunity to see more of the city and enjoy quality time with them before I travel back to Scotland. If given the chance I suggest exploring Denver, it is an adventure you will not regret.
Lots of love,
Laura Jane x
